State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Arafat called on the media to stand up for the interests of the country and the people. The state minister made this call in the speech of the chief guest at the Bangladesh Press Council Medal 2023 awarding ceremony at the Information Bhavan Auditorium on Circuit House Road in the capital on Wednesday (May 29) afternoon.

At that time, the state minister said, the country belongs to us. Conspiracies against the interests of this country must be dealt with unitedly. In the coming days, in Bangladesh, in building a non-communal society with the spirit of liberation war, in moving this society forward, in the efforts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the field of inclusive development, everyone, including the media, must play a collective role.

The state minister also said that the government fully believes in the freedom of the media. Because the freedom of the media is part of the spirit of the liberation war. The dream with which this country was created is a big dream of democracy, protection of human rights, freedom of expression, freedom of media. These issues were taken away from us on August 15, 1975 by killing the architect of this country, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Then the power of darkness came to power in this country killing democracy. This country has been led to darkness by imposing military rule, suppressing media, killing freedom of expression, destroying human rights, destroying dreams of freedom. The reactionary and anti-liberation war evil forces have been rehabilitated. From that reality, in the last fifteen years, efforts have been made to gradually move Bangladesh from the dark place to the light, to the spirit of the liberation war. As part of this effort, efforts are being made to strengthen the press council institutionally, improve the media environment institutionally, and create a more healthy environment.

He said that the government is standing by them in various ways so that those who are associated with the media can work with professionalism and responsibility. The government of Bangabandhu’s daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, wants to welcome the media as it enjoys all kinds of freedom even if it criticizes the government. Media acts as the eyes of the government. If there is any deviation-failure, if there is a problem, the media will highlight it impartially and professionally. Through this, the government thinks that the media is cooperating with the government.

He also said that we want to see the media as a supporting power of the government. If the government’s deviations-failures or any problems are pointed out based on true facts, the government will welcome them and give recognition and awards. This government is the government of Bangabandhu’s daughter. Prizes are awarded to critics. Therefore, Sheikh Hasina government’s tolerance towards criticism is proved by awarding the Press Council Medal.

The state minister also said that when anti-Bangladesh conspirators sit on the neck of the media, abuse the freedom of the media and engage in conspiracies, conspire against the interests of the country and the country by conspiring with various foreign conspiracies, mislead the people of the country through misinformation and propaganda, then problems arise. These are not what the government calls criticism, they are propaganda disinformation, disinformation, injustice and conspiracy. If people are deceived through injustice, misinformation and propaganda, if it is bad journalism, professional journalists want to suppress it in the interest of fair and healthy journalism. The government is with professional journalists.

The Minister of State for Information said that a few days ago, Germany’s Deutsche Welle made and promoted a documentary film. They have created a kind of far-reaching disinformation documentary to belittle our success and reputation in peacekeeping missions internationally. It is against Bangladesh. Not against any party, not against any individual. The institution which protects the security of Bangladesh, the institution which has played a pioneering role in establishing peace in the whole world, which has enhanced the reputation of Bangladesh, to belittle the Bangladesh Army is to belittle Bangladesh. We would welcome any report or documentary from Deutsche Welle or any organization or news organization out of their honest commitment to human rights. The state minister also added that western countries give us lectures on freedom of media from time to time. We have seen the behavior of the police in the absolutely peaceful protest of students and teachers in various universities in the United States. Iqbal Hossain, Patuakhali District Correspondent of Time Television Sikder Jabir Hossain in rural journalism category and Jharna Moni, senior reporter of Dainik Bhor Paper in women journalist category.
