Prime Minister ‘surprised’ in appointment of RAB DG, barrister Harun Or Rashid is ‘best’ in terms of qualifications
M.Abdullah Al Mamun Khan, Acting Editor:
Many names were mooted as the new Director General (DG) of the elite force RAB. Analytical reports also appeared in the media. But Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave a big ‘shock’ in the election of the successor of outgoing Director General (DG), Bangladesh Police Additional IG (Grade-1) M Khurshid Hossain. As the new director general of RAB, he has chosen an honest and talented officer of the 15th BCS police batch, Additional IGP Barrister Md. Haroon or Rashid. This son of Munshiganj, working as Additional IGP (Human Resource Management) at Police Headquarters, will now hold the highest post of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
This information was informed in a notification issued by the Public Security Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday (May 29). In a separate order, the current DG Khurshid Hossain has been retired.
According to the notification, the new Director General Haroon Aur Rashid will replace the current Director General M Khurshid Hossain. The head of the government has trusted this police officer with a clean image to maintain the law and order situation of the country along with suppressing radical militancy and terrorism. Barrister Haroon Or Rashid is going to sit on this more ‘touchy’ and ‘prestigious’ chair on June 5, combining skills, professionalism, competence and overall acceptance with the fountain of honesty.
The Prime Minister’s brilliant, visionary and prudent decision to nominate a new Director General (DG) of RAB has resonated with the public as well. This elite force has also been moved to set an exemplary example in rooting out pirates or extremists, anti-narcotics operations or arresting serious criminals. Barrister Haroon Or Rashid paid his respects to the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was blessed with a new responsibility. The new DG expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Home Minister, brave freedom fighter Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.
Barrister Haroon, an experienced police officer who gained reputation in his own force, was anointed as a brilliant leader by overcoming all doubts. His career in the police is illustrious. He became DIG of Mymensingh Range in December 2019 while serving as DIG Logistics at Police Headquarters. During his career he was under the direct supervision of police service modernization such as Police Clearance Certificate, Online GD, BD Police Helpline and CIMS. He served as the DIG of Police Telecom and Information Management (T&IM) during the journey of national level emergency service ‘999’ which is considered as a unique milestone on the way to build digital Bangladesh. Barrister Harun oversaw the launch of 999 service in Bangladesh in 2017 keeping in mind the US 911 service under the overall guidance of Prime Minister’s Information and Communication Technology Adviser Sajib Wazed Joy to realize Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s dream.
Haroon Or Rashid, who completed MSc in Statistics from Dhaka University in 1994, obtained LLB from University of London in 2009 and MBA from Dhaka University in 2016. During his tenure as DIG of Mymensingh Range, he received the Purity Award for the financial year 2019-2020. By proving himself step by step, he prepared himself to carry out the optional duties on a larger scale by being immersed in the spirit of the liberation war. In the development progress of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, she has been a proven charioteer to build a smart Bangladesh, and she has made herself bright with a sense of responsibility and duty.
Analysts believe that RAB’s new DG Anand Tarangit Abahan, who is extremely non-sectarian, born with deep patriotism and humanitarianism, will be able to set a precedent of professionalism and sense of responsibility in the naturalness and individuality of unwavering convenience.
