Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. Tajul Islam said internal migration is a challenge. People have a natural tendency to migrate from rural to urban areas for economic advancement and opportunities. It happens all over the world. But as Bangladesh is a small and densely populated country, it is a challenging task to ensure proper civic amenities in the cities of so many people.

In this case, facilities like cities should be ensured in rural areas. If balanced and sustainable development in rural areas is ensured in terms of education, job opportunities, health system, communication system etc., internal migration trend will decrease. The current government under the leadership of honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to fulfill this goal.

He said this to Sudhibrinda, who was present during the chief guest’s speech at the Mayor’s Exchange Knowledge workshop organized by the initiative of the Local Government Department and in collaboration with UNDP and UK International Development.

The LIUPCP best practice assessment workshop was held at Sonargaon Hotel on Wednesday (May 29).

Tajul Islam said, ‘Due to the exploitation and deprivation of the military regime for a long time, the health, food and education of Bangladesh were in a deplorable condition. The food shortage situation was deplorable. Immediately after the formation of Sheikh Hasina government in 1996, after three and a half years, Bangladesh achieved self-sufficiency in food by filling the deficit.

Community clinics are established for every 6,000 people with a commitment to provide health services to rural and remote areas. Health care and nutritional standards of the population improved. Visible development comes in rural infrastructure, communication system including education sector. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s dream of building Sonar Bangla, the current government is working tirelessly to realize that dream.

Citing the examples of Vietnam and South Korea, the minister also said, ‘Many contemporary countries like ours have reached the pinnacle of development due to their relentless efforts and hard work.

Under the leadership of Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, if we all come together from our respective positions through hard work, we will be able to build a smart developed Bangladesh by 2041.’

The workshop held under the chairmanship of Local Government Department Secretary Muhammad Ibrahim was attended by the resident representative of UNDP Bangladesh, Stephen Liler, Deputy High Commissioner of the British High Commission, Matt Cannell and others.
